1. Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability:
The project has resulted in substantial reduction in water use. Foxtail millet is a drought-tolerant, “smart crop” that requires over 90% less water than rice—from firm to fork, a critical benefit in a region experiencing increasing water stress. This conserves precious groundwater and reduces the energy footprint associated with irrigation. In addition, millet cultivation, with its dense root system and minimal tillage requirements, significantly improves soil organic carbon content. The project generates carbon credits through reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from reduced water and fertilizer use, as well as enhanced carbon sequestration in the soil. The aggregate reduction or sequestration in CO2 could be as much as 4.38 kg per kg of grain production. Moreover, by breaking the rice monoculture, we are promoting agricultural diversity, which creates a healthier ecosystem and supports a broader range of beneficial insects and soil microbes. For example, foxtail millet’s root structure and exudates will support a more varied soil bacteria, resulting in benefits such as enhanced soil nitrogen, increased phosphorus availability for plants. Thus, contribution to Net Zero comprises lower methane emissions, reduced nitrous oxide emissions, carbon sequestration of the soil and reduced energy use in irrigation.
2. Economic Empowerment and Green Growth:
The project is anchored in creating a premium value chain. The rising global and domestic demand for foxtail millet as a healthy, gluten-free grain allows us to secure a higher sale price for farmers. This, combined with lower input costs, translates into a documented increase in net income or savings, providing a pathway out of poverty. This is possible as 1 kg of foxtail millet can feed 10 people while the same amount of rice can feed 5 people. To ensure maximum value for the farmers, we are establishing direct market linkages with buyers who value sustainably produced, high-quality millet. Moreover, our focus extends beyond cultivation to include post-harvest processing and value-added products (e.g., cookies, cereal, and noodles), ensuring that the economic benefits are diversified.
3. Community resilience and social equity:
This project is not a top-down initiative. We are co-designing and implementing the project with farmers, leveraging their local knowledge and expertise. Farmers are trained on full cycle of grain production. Local agriculture extension office is involved to facilitate with insights on seeds, fertilizers, pesticide and other aspects of cultivation. The initiative provides a platform for peer-to-peer learning, knowledge sharing, and collective problem-solving. Second, we are promoting consumption of foxtail millet within the farmer communities by stressing on its superior nutritional benefits—rich in fiber, protein, and essential minerals with a low glycemic index. By promoting its consumption, we are contributing to long-term public health and well-being. Finally, the project provides new opportunities for women in value-added processing and marketing. Over 50% of the farmers engaged in this initiative are women.
4. Contribution to SDGs:
Contribution to SDGs from the project is summarized below.
>>> SDG 2 – Zero hunger: Foxtail millet is drought-tolerant, matures faster than rice, and provides a nutritious alternative grain (rich in protein, fiber, minerals). This diversifies diets and improves food security.
>>> SDG 3 – Good health and well-being: Reduced pesticide use in diversified cropping systems means fewer chemical residues in food and water; millet is also gluten-free and diabetic-friendly.
>>> SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation: Foxtail millet uses as much 90% less water than irrigated rice, easing pressure on groundwater and surface water resources.
>>> SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth: New value chains for millet (processing, marketing, by-products) can create rural jobs and small-scale entrepreneurship opportunities.
>>> SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production: This is done through crop rotation and sustainable soil management, reducing over-reliance on one crop and harmful farming inputs.
>>> SDG 13 – Climate action: Lower methane emissions, better carbon sequestration in healthier soils, and climate-resilient cropping help adapt to and mitigate climate change.
>>> SDG 15 – Life on land: The initiative enhances biodiversity above and below ground, supports pollinators, beneficial insects, and soil microbes, and reduces habitat loss from monoculture farming.
We are currently developing project documentation and designing an evaluation to assess multidimensional benefits of the project.
